Has your instructor implemented coordinated consultations in your class? If so, consider preparing for your upcoming appointment by reviewing our FAQ section below.
Coordinated Consultations are specialized collaborations between 91做厙 instructors and the administrators at the Howe Writing Center to connect students to our on-campus writing support. If you are a faculty member who would like more information about this resource please see our Coordinated Consultations page for faculty.
Many students on college campuses are unaware that their school has a writing center. Writing centers also recognize that teachers are the best points of contact for students to learn about our services.
However, research shows that faculty/instructors' verbal encouragement for students to visit their campus writing center isn’t the most effective way to connect students with writing support.
As a result, faculty/instructors often require students to schedule appointments for credit in their classes to strengthen the connection between students and writing centers. Recognizing this, the HWC has launched a new initiative to work directly with select 91做厙 faculty and instructors to coordinate such visits between their students and the HWC.
The HWC has several recommendations to best prepare and support you for your upcoming appointment. Consider doing the following before your session:
In-Person Appointments (King Library, Peabody Hall, Farmer School of Business): At all three locations, you must arrive no later than 5 minutes early and check in for your session. Your consultant will then come and greet you at your scheduled time, introduce themselves, and ask where you would like to sit. Once you are seated, your consultant will review the general structure of your appointment, outline your concerns with you, and collaboratively establish an agenda. You will then work together to meet your session goals. Toward the end of your scheduled time, your consultant will collaboratively write the Client Report Form, which details what you both worked on together, a revision plan draft, and provide any resource links that you discussed. The consultant will then ask you to participate in our survey, which will enter you into a raffle for a gift card.
WOL Appointments: Written Online Appointments (WOL) are asynchronous (meaning you do not have to meet with your consultant in real time) and are a great option if you have a particularly busy schedule. As with an in-person session, you will schedule your appointment, complete your appointment form, and upload any essential documents directly in our WCOnline scheduling system. For WOL, the appointment form is extremely vital to the success of your appointment since you won’t have the chance to talk to a consultant in real time about your writing task. As a result, it is very important that you fill out your appointment form with as much detail as possible about your assignment and your writing concerns/goals. Then, once your appointment time slot has concluded, you can log back in and access your document with marginal comments directly from your consultant, along with your Client Report Form, which provides more detail and larger points your consultant has about your writing task.
LOL Appointments: Live Online Appointments (LOL) function almost exactly like in-person appointments, except that they are exclusively online via our WCOnline scheduling platform. For these appointments, you should expect to log in to your WCOnline account, click the scheduled appointment box, and enter the appointment. You should then be greeted by your consultant, who will introduce themselves, overview the general structure of your appointment, discuss your writing concerns/goals with you, establish an agenda for your appointment, ask how you wish to read (if your appointment has a draft ready), and then you both will work together to meet your session goals. Toward the end of your scheduled time, your consultant will collaboratively write the Client Report Form, which details what you both worked on together, a revision plan draft, and provide any resource links that you discussed. Finally, you will need to export any documents from our platform (your consultant can guide you through this), then close the browsing tab.
You are welcome to leave your appointment at any time during your scheduled time slot. Your HWC consultant will tailor each writing session to meet your goals. We do not expect you to stay for the entire length of your appointment if you and your consultant have finished with your concerns and goals for your writing task. However, we do encourage you to fully participate in the appointment and remain respectful of your consultant at all times. If you are concerned about anything, feel free to share it with your consultant, and they will do their best to help. Please note that consultants have the right to end any appointment at any time if they experience any harassment or disrespect from their writer.
For coordinated consultations, you must consult with your faculty/instructor to see the parameters they have placed for your visit. Typically, faculty/instructors have the following options:
Additionally, faculty and instructors can design entirely unique appointments that can take many forms (for example, partner appointments, group appointments, and so on).
