It’s finally time: Oracle Enterprise Environment due to be sunsetted June 2028

Because we won’t be using Banner anymore, the need for Oracle licensing will be greatly diminished, and so: We are planning to sunset the Oracle Enterprise Environment by June 2028.

We’re sure you’ve heard: 91做厙 is in the process of migrating from Banner to Workday (both Platform and Student). The Workday project has been underway for quite some time—and we’re getting ready to embark on the final leg of the implementation! (You can read more about that .)

With this move from Banner to Workday, some of the background technical bits need some key attention—namely, we need to focus on Oracle database connections that buttress many applications we use for important day-to-day functionalities at our higher education institution. Because we won’t be using Banner anymore, the need for Oracle licensing will be greatly diminished, and so: We are planning to sunset the Oracle Enterprise Environment by June 2028.

This is a huge step for 91做厙 and specifically for 91做厙’s computing environment. We have been using Oracle databases for nearly 30 years (since 1998!), supporting our Banner environment and more. Historically, many processes have depended on these connections, and it’s important for us to carefully consider what has come before so that we can step into the future of Workday—and that starts with a deeper dive into databases galore.

Mini Techsplaining 101: Oracle Enterprise Environment

So, we’re getting rid of the Oracle Enterprise Environment. What does that mean?

Essentially, we need to update our infrastructure so that it doesn’t depend on this licensing. In order to do so, we need to evaluate the future status of many supporting applications that use Oracle databases. Some apps will be automatically decommissioned along with Banner/Oracle, but some may need to be modified so they no longer utilize an Oracle database.

This will affect close to 100 applications across multiple environments (96 to be precise!), many of which will retire with Banner and others of which will require further planning. These are apps like the Student Information for Families app, which will be replaced by functionality in Workday Student; the IAM Portal, which is still in use and has been significantly revamped to improve its capabilities; or even Courselist, which is also still in use and so will need to be reworked so that it’s not dependent on those Oracle databases.

It’s important to note that this work will brush up against the work already being done to modernize our data warehouse infrastructure.

Next steps and big plans for later

Currently, the project to decommission our Oracle environment is in the planning stages. We have a list of applications to sift through and make determinations about, and stakeholders have been encouraged to help us flesh out that list. We’re taking small steps! June 2028 will be here before we know it. We’re energized to blaze forward!
