Purpose and Description

Honors courses are taught across the University. Unlike a department, faculty teaching Honors courses
do not typically interact with each other to discuss pedagogy and share ideas. The proposed FLC
addresses this gap by creating a community where faculty from different departments can explore
principles of Honors education together.

Participants will develop their teaching skills through readings and activities that promote reflection,
discussion, and inquiry related to characteristics of Honors courses and experiences. We will begin by
reviewing existing Honors materials, then conduct collaborative literature searches to identify additional
characteristics. The process will be one of critical reflection and creation. In addition, the deliverables
will position the participants to confidently offer Honors courses and experiences and share what we
have learned with others.

Activities

Members will:

  • Develop knowledge of characteristics of Honors courses through foundational readings and
    collaborative literature searches
  • Engage in discussion and sense-making as a community
  • Create a best practices artifact (document, video, or another medium) as a community
  • Individually create an Honors experience or draft of an Honors course plan
  • Develop materials to showcase Honors courses and experiences
