91°µÍø wins 2025 Premier Student Chapter Award from Engineers Without Borders

Engineers Without Borders (EWB) USA has named the the Premier Student Chapter for 2025. According to EWB USA, this student organization is “recognized as a student chapter that sets the standard for excellence in collaboration, fundraising, and global impact.”

91°µÍø’s student chapter of EWB is active in engineering projects both as well as water pipeline projects in . This year, they hosted the Great Lakes Regional EWB Conference in Benton Hall, and received a $10,000 award from the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).

Vendome earns second Most Influential Paper designation

Christopher Vendome, Ph.D., associate professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering, has received another Most Influential Paper (MIP) award. This paper, titled “Deep Learning Code Fragments for Code Clone Detection,” received a Most Influential Paper Award from ASE (Automated Software Engineering), which is an A* conference as ranked by the . CORE provides assessments of major conferences in the computing disciplines. An A* ranking indicates a flagship conference and leading venue in a discipline area. Vendome co-authored this paper, published in 2016.

Last year, a paper co-authored by Vendome titled “Toward Deep Learning Software Repositories” was selected as the Most Influential Paper of (MSR), an international conference.

Integrating advanced writing skills into 91°µÍø’s engineering curriculum

Faculty from two different College of Engineering and Computing departments have taken steps to incorporate Advanced Writing into existing curriculum. Formal submissions from Justin Saul, Ph.D., Catherine Almquist, Ph.D., and Peter Jamieson, Ph.D. – with support and collaboration from faculty, staff, and leadership from their respective departments – were accepted by the Roger and Joyce Howe Center for Writing Excellence (HCWE) committee, directed by University Distinguished Professor of Written Communication Elizabeth Wardle. Advanced Writing components have been incorporated into course sequences for students majoring in Biomedical Engineering and Chemical Engineering, as well as incorporated into ECE 348 (Engineering Design Communication and Tools) a course offered by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Once the departments' submissions are formalized by the University, students enrolled in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Department of Chemical, Paper, and Biomedical Engineering will be able to satisfy the Advanced Writing component of the 91°µÍø plan within their major curriculum.

Andrew Paluch co-publishes research article in ChemistryOpen

Andrew Paluch, associate professor of Chemical, Paper, and Biomedical Engineering, has co-published an article in ChemistryOpen. The article, ,” is the result of MS thesis work by Yoshua Mtulo at Dar es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE), whom associate professor Paluch co-supervised. The article presents research addressing a key gap by providing a novel computational evaluation of statin analogs. This research was made possible through computational resources provided by the Ohio Supercomputer Center, whose OnDemand platform makes accessing High Performance Computing (HPC) resources via a web browser possible for students like Yoshua in Tanzania.

CEC graduate students to present award-winning research at upcoming IEEE conferences

91°µÍø College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) graduate students Fatama Tuz (Asha) Zahura and Farzana Alam will present their research at major IEEE conferences this fall.

Zahura will present her paper, “Feedforward Control of LLC Converter: Time Domain State Trajectory-Based Analytical Formulation,” at the IEEE Energy Conversion Conference and Expo in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Oct. 19–23. She has been selected to receive the Women in Engineering Travel Grant Award.

Alam will present her paper, “Optimized PCB Design for Low Commutation Loop Inductance and Compact Heatsinking for GaN-Based Converters,” at the 12th Annual IEEE Workshop on Wide Bandgap Power Devices and Applications (WiPDA 2025) in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Nov. 10–12. She will also receive a WIPDA Women in Engineering Travel Grant Award in support of her participation.

91°µÍø Ph.D. student, associate professor published in chemistry journal

91°µÍø’s Zachary Mentzer, Ph.D. student in Engineering, and Mehdi Zanjani, associate professor of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, were recently published in the Journal of Physical Chemistry B by the American Chemical Society.

Mentzer co-authored the paper, with Zanjani and Yoonjee Park of the University of Cincinnati. This paper investigates how the geometric structure of pore networks within membranes, along with the steric effects of antibody structure, influence the release kinetics of drug delivery systems.

Madeleine Keller ’23 and Madeline McKinney ’23 were the lead authors on the recent article “” from Metabolic Engineering Volume 91. The article, which reports record level psilocybin production metrics, also featured contributions from other members of the lab of Andrew Jones, associate professor of Chemical, Paper, and Biomedical Engineering, including College of Engineering and Computing instructor William Gibbons.

Paluch publishes work in Journal of Molecular Liquids

Andrew Paluch, associate professor in the Department of Chemical, Paper, and Biomedical Engineering, has just published in the Journal of Molecular Liquids: “.” The publication is the result of the MS thesis work of Lucas Kwiyukwa at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) which he co-supervised. In this work, Paluch and his co-authors use molecular simulation to investigate the solvation structure/mechanism and relative solubility of amygdalin, a cyanogenic glycoside with anticancer and pain-relief properties, in a range of pure solvents. The manuscript is published open access, and is free to all. This research was made possible with computational support from the Ohio Supercomputer Center which graciously provided computational resources. The OnDemand platform has allowed students in Tanzania to access and use HPC resources via a web browser.

Bhunia coauthors paper in IET Information Security

Assistant professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering Suman Bhunia, along with coauthors Matthew Blackert, Andrew DePero, Henry Deal, and Amar Nath Patra, has published a paper in IET Information Security. IET Information Security is a bimonthly peer-reviewed scientific journal covering information security and cryptography. The paper, , was written in collaboration with the students in Bhunia’s Ethical Hacking class.

CEC faculty members to present at conference

College of Engineering and Computing faculty members Suman Bhunia, Garrett Goodman, and Peter Jamieson's work on Large Language Model (LLM) based Generative AI tools for Computer Science education will be presented at the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) 2025 conference.

Their paper, “Benchmarking of LLM-Based Generative AI for CSE Undergraduate Curriculum,” evaluates how LLM-based Generative AI tools perform on assessments from core computer science courses, identifying their strengths and limitations. Their findings provide insights into integrating AI into the curriculum to better prepare students for AI-augmented careers.

Honglu Jiang, assistant professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering; James Walden, professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering; Marianne Murphy, professor of Computer and Information Technology; and Joseph Nwankpa, associate professor of Information Systems and Analytics, received $199,850 from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for their project titled “Multidisciplinary Pathways to Cybersecurity Professionals.” Theirs is one of 15 cooperative agreements at education and community organizations in 11 states totaling nearly $3 million aimed at developing the workforce needed to defend the nation’s organizations and infrastructure from cybersecurity risks.

Wang receives grant from NIBIB

Hui Wang, associate professor of Chemical, Paper, and Biomedical Engineering, has recently been awarded a new grant of approximately $200,000 from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB), a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This grant will support Wang and his team in developing a reliable optical imaging phantom for optical imaging applications. During his tenure at 91°µÍø, Wang has secured $1.5 million in research grants from NIH and the Department of Defense (DOD) as a principal investigator. He has also contributed as a co-investigator to an additional $2.3 million in research funding.

Scott named senior member of National Academy of Inventors

Mark Scott, associate professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, was named a senior member of the National Academy of Inventors earlier this year. In August 2024, Scott was granted the O'Toole Family Professor Fellowship for his research in the field of Power Electronics.
