Matt Omasta to depart 91°µÍø; Marly Wooster named Interim Chair of Department of Theatre

Professor and Chair of the Department of Theatre Matt Omasta will be leaving 91°µÍø this summer to assume a new leadership role as Chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Omasta joined 91°µÍø in 2021 and has led the Department of Theatre through a period of growth and innovation, supporting students, faculty, and staff while advancing the department's academic and artistic mission. During his tenure, he helped strengthen academic programs, foster student success, and champion opportunities for collaboration both within the department and across the university.

A nationally recognized scholar and theatre educator, Omasta's work has focused on theatre education, applied theatre, and community-engaged performance. Throughout his time at 91°µÍø, he remained committed to creating meaningful educational experiences for students while supporting the artistic and scholarly achievements of faculty and staff.

In sharing the news with colleagues, Omasta expressed gratitude for his time at 91°µÍø.

To ensure continuity in the department's leadership, Associate Professor Marly Wooster has agreed to serve as Interim Chair of the Department of Theatre for the 2026–27 academic year.

“I am so thankful to be stepping into this leadership role in this department that I love,” said Wooster. “There’s a lot of change, that’s both exciting and challenging, but I know we’ll work together to keep the learning, performing, and creating happening for this year and beyond. I’m excited to get started.”

Wooster is a professor of theatre and an accomplished lighting designer whose dedication to students, creative excellence, and collaborative leadership have made her a highly respected member of the 91°µÍø community. Over the course of her career at 91°µÍø, she has taught and mentored theatre students while contributing to numerous productions and creative projects. Her work as a designer, educator, and colleague has helped shape the department's vibrant learning environment and strong sense of community.

Known for her student-centered approach and commitment to collaboration, Wooster has played a key role in advancing the department's educational and artistic goals. Her extensive experience and deep knowledge of the department position her well to guide the program during this transitional year.
