In the January 2018 issue of Health Affairs, researchers from Yale University and the Scripps Gerontology Center at 91°µÍø of Ohio published a study finding that AAA involvement in a broad variety of cross-sector collaborations with health care and social service organizations is associated with a reduction in hospital re-admission rates.

“With more than 2.6 million people age 60 and older, Ohio ranks sixth nationally in the size of its aging population,” said Suzanne Kunkel, executive director of Scripps Gerontology Center. “While a growing older population is a marker of societal advancement, such increases present pressing challenges for the state, particularly in the provision of long-term services and supports.”

To be selected for this award, a faculty member must demonstrate teaching excellence, be a contributor to the life and mission of 91°µÍø, and be a distinguished scholar of national and international stature with demonstrated recognition and with a projected high-level of scholarly productivity in the future.

The AgeWell program trains and employs able older adults to provide companionship to chronically ill older adults in the community. The program aims to improve health and wellbeing outcomes through reducing isolation and identifying potential health or social problems and making referrals to the appropriate services. It also hopes to decrease medical costs through reducing hospitalizations, hospital readmissions, and emergency room visits. The AgeWell program has been successfully piloted in Cape Town, South Africa where participants had significant improvements in well-being scores throughout the time of the pilot.

Dr. Bei Wu, from New York University (NYU) will be sharing her research in a lecture titled “Improving Quality of Care of Older Adults: Twenty-Year Long-Term Care System Development in China”. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, November 7, at 5:00 PM in 180 Marcum Center. The event is free and open to the public.
